Lagos Donates Vehicle to NYSC for Monitoring
The Lagos State Secretariat of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has received the delivery of donation of a brand new Nissan Ultima salon car from the Lagos State Government.
While presenting the salon car to the State Coordinator of the scheme, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi at the end of official closing ceremony of the three weeks orientation programme for the year 2014 Batch C corps members, Governor Raji Fashola stated that assistance to the scheme and other Federal institutions in the state was not a new development.
He was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Wale Ahmed, the governor said the car would enhance monitoring of corps members in the state and boost day to day activities of the NYSC Secretariat.
Dr. Ahmed who is also Chairman of the Lagos State NYSC Governing Board said, “You are getting to know of it because I came to camp to represent his Excellency Governor Raji Fashola (SAN) at the close of orientation training.
“This is not the first time Lagos State government is supporting NYSC and we have been doing that from several fronts like; quarterly allocations and a lot of other ways to support the scheme. We work hand in hand with NYSC and other stakeholders in order to make the scheme a success in the state.
“Whichever way you look at it, the presence of the corps members is part of the workforce and economy of Lagos and that has become necessary to support the scheme and this is the policy of the government and most of the supports we give does not get to public domain, ” he added.
He explained that the car will further enhance the movement of the NYSC Coordinator in the monitoring of corps members serving in various communities in Lagos.
The Commissioner assured that the government would not relent in giving support to all and sundry, saying that the Fashola led administration in the state does not in any way discriminate between federal and state agencies and had actually build police stations and given support to Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for rendering services to citizens of the state.
Earlier in the governor’s address to the 3,603 corps members deployed to the state, he enjoined the corps members to make good use of the seminars on skill acquisition as an integral part of the service year.
He explained that the skill acquisition training was put in place by the government to address the scourge of graduate unemployment, saying that the aim is to give room for self employment and promote entrepreneurship among corps members.
He added, “As agents of change and development, the state is looking up to you for physical transformation and technological ideas that will lead to the socio-economic development in our educational sector, in poverty alleviation, in rural health and in combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic as well as illness and diseases bedeviling our society”.
The governor charged the corps members to take advantage of the platform provided by the NYSC as a mini-Nigeria to cultivate healthy relationship with one another.
Advising the corps member on the task of nation building, Fashola stated that nation building as a collective effort requires determination to face numerous challenges that come with national assignments.
He assured them of adequate safety in the state and urged them to take advantage of the two tolls free emergency help lines of 767 and 112 in case of any threat or security challenge.
